Guide to Oscar: Best Film Editing

The Best Film Editing category was first introduced in 1934 and has been given out every year since. Of all the Oscar categories aside from, obviously, Best Picture, the Best Editing category gives the best indication of a film's chances of winning Best Picture. You have to go all the way to 1980 to find a year in which the eventual winner of Best Picture wasn't at least nominated for Best Editing.

This year's nominees:

Anne-Sophie Bion & Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist

First nomination for both. Hazanavicius also nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

Kevin Tent, The Descendants

First nomination.

Angus Wall & Kirk Baxter, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

3rd nomination for both. Both previously won for The Social Network and nominated for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Thelma Schoonmaker, Hugo

7th nomination. Previously won for The Departed, The Aviator and Raging Bull, and nominated for Gangs of New York, Goodfellas and Woodstock.

Christopher Tellefsen, Moneyball

First nomination.
